Jiu Jitsu Sizing Guide: How to Find a BJJ Gi That Fits
If you have enrolled for classes at the BJJ gym and need to buy new gi, you have come to the right place. Gi is the uniform people wear when practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and purchasing at least one set of gi will only enhance your practice. Like most clothing items, BJJ gi comes in different sizes, and we will tell you how to figure out which BJJ gi size will fit you best.
How to Read the Chart
The size chart for gi usually has a letter and number system, with the letter indicating who it is for (A for adult male, Y for youth, W for women, L for long, S for short, etc.), and the number indicating the gi’s size. Some gi size charts also include sleeve and pant lengths too. Start by measuring your height and weight. Find your range on the chart and follow that same row to see which size will fit your body type.
The Size Chart
This is one example of what a size chart looks like. Each gi brand will have a similar size chart, but sizing isn’t necessarily universal. However, once you know how to read one size chart, you should be able to read any other size chart.
Washing Instructions
BJJ gi is designed for individuals taking Jiu Jitsu classes, so make sure you get a BJJ gi that fits you properly before you wash them. Wash your gi in cold water and always hang it out to dry. Drying the uniform with heat can cause the fabric to shrink.
